Cabinet of Garden Culture | 500 Years of Garden Culture in Kroměříž
April 19, 2013 — 2016
Kroměříž Archdiocesan Museum | Chateau 2nd Floor
Garden culture is still among the unjustly neglected areas in Czech art history, although at least up to the first half of the 19th century it was one of the major forms of "high culture". The National Heritage Institute together with the Olomouc Museum of Art and the Archbishop’s Chateau in Kroměříž have prepared, with the support of the Structural Funds of the European Union, an extensive exhibition tracing the nearly 500-year history of one of the most comprehensive and at the same time most poetic garden complexes, the Flower Garden and the Chateau Garden in Kroměříž, which thanks to their uniqueness were entered in the UNESCO List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1998. It is the very first extensive exhibition of the phenomenon of garden art in the Czech lands. For the first time, the general public is shown historical materials relating, not only to the Chateau gardens, but also to other of Europe´s finest gardens from the 16th to the 19th century.
