Only with difficulty be persuaded to set to music a libretto by the biblical theme. Babylonians led by King Nebuchadnezzar (Nabucco) invade Jerusalem, destroyed Solomon's Temple and the Jewish nation was dragged into captivity. Nabucco, which Jehovah punish madness has to face the intrigues of his supposed daughter Abigail. Finally, recognize their mistake and Jehovah's strength and returns the Jews freedom. The popularity of opera story of the deliverance of the Jews from Babylonian captivity went at the time of its inception hand in hand with the desire of the Italian population after liberation from Habsburg rule. World famous chorus "Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate" (Fly, thought, on golden wings ...) became during the premiere of liberation songs sung all over Italy.
