The Cunning Little Vixen Janáček's operas nejlyričtějším and nejmelodičtějším . Sparkle of humor , kind and a bit of whimsy prickly and also attract special concept of blending the world of humans and animals, earthiness , humane philosophy of life to mysticism .
At the beginning of the story of the cunning fox , the decision Brno editor of the People newspaper regularly to provide our readers with a humorous cartoon pictures text. Among the painters were addressed and Stanislav Lolek (1873-1936) , a great nature lover and hunter by profession . Lolek initially reluctant, but Bohumil editor Markalous in his Prague studio found hidden under a pile of dusty old junk drawings of the fierce hunters with bristling beard and cunning fox . Arnost editor in chief Heinrich liked the pictures and commissioned writer Rudolf Těsnohlídka (1882-1928) , that they wrote the accompanying text. The series Cunning Little Vixen ( originally to be called Bystronožka , but typesetter in a printer made a mistake ) based in the People newspaper from April to June 1920 , four or five times a week. Soon gained wide popularity and audience came later as a separate book.
Households with Janacek was one of the regular readers of newspapers and composer People's cartoons interesting. During the holidays of 1921 he began doing sketch scenarios of a new opera by Vixen and work on the libretto . Of the original twenty-three chapters of the series they chose ten , stressed the animal world and reduce the amount of projecting human figures and some merged into one. Těsnohlídkova story ends with a wedding Vixen Zlatohřbítka . Janáček , but unlike the original draft courage to significant change and let the main character die , because as a true dramatist felt the need for catharsis . Preparations for composing operas include the in-depth study of the life of foxes : Janacek had Hukvaldy from his friend , farmer Louis Jung, send a message about the fox mature , many tend to have cubs , how long are pregnant and how often throw young . While staying at Hukvaldy composer often make the forest gamekeeper Sweet, who tracked down the foxhole , and together they watched the young foxes frolicking .
The Cunning Little Vixen had its world premiere in Brno theater 6. November of 1924. Musical productions took great promoter of Janáček's works , then head of the opera conductor Franz Neumann . Director was entrusted to a young director Otakar Zítek and artist became a painter Eduard Milén .
New production of The Cunning Little Vixen prepared a set of Janacek's opera in musical direction of Artistic Director of Opera and internationally acclaimed conductor Tomas Hanus and directed by English director and intendant English Touring Opera James Conway. Part of the production team is an English artist and set designer Neil Irish . The production represents an interesting articulation of Czech tradition of performance and production team of the English novel perspective on Janacek's operatic masterpiece.
