Antonín Dvořák

THE DEVIL AND KATE

A Czech national fairytale

Both operas by Antonín Dvořák, The Devil and Kate as well as Rusalka, are based on  fairytale motifs. The combination of folklore and humorous with lyrical and fantastic elements is the typical, and still very popular, trait of Czech dramatic creation. The theme of the charming fairytale opera The Devil and Kate comes from the same-named fairytale by Božena Němcová about the cheeky and fearless Kate, the wise shepherd George and the duped devil Marbuel. Dvořák was able to masterfully create contrasting scenes with a touch of folklore, devilish fiery but also courtly noble. Thanks to his genius imagination with the musical dramatic motifs and orchestra instrumentation, The Devil and Kate is a completely original masterpiece, exceeding Dvořák’s previous operas in many respects.
